The band assisted chin up from the foot is an ideal progression for beginners who aren’t yet able to complete bodyweight chin ups. It allows you to train the proper movement pattern while gradually building strength in the lats, biceps, and core—key muscles for pulling exercises.

Key Benefits:

  • Builds pulling strength in the lats and biceps
  • Allows progression toward unassisted chin ups
  • Teaches proper chin up mechanics with reduced bodyweight
  • Enhances scapular control and core stability
  • Great for beginners or as a warm-up for advanced lifters
  1. Attach a resistance band to the chin up bar and loop the other end around one foot.
  2. Grasp the bar with a supinated (palms facing you) grip, at shoulder-width distance.
  3. Keep the banded leg straight and the other either extended or bent slightly.
  4. Take a deep breath, brace your core, and squeeze your glutes.
  5. Pull your chest toward the bar by driving your elbows down and activating your lats.
  6. Stop when your chin reaches the bar (or when your lats are fully contracted).
  7. Lower yourself back down with control, stopping just before full elbow lockout.
  8. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
  • 🔒 Keep your leg straight so the band provides consistent assistance.
  • 👍 Use a false grip (thumbs over the bar) to reduce bicep dominance.
  • 🧠 Keep your head neutral—avoid hyperextending your neck.
  • 🦵 Extend your legs in front of your body if the bar height allows.
  • 💥 Focus on pulling with the lats, not the pecs. Stop pulling if your shoulders round forward.
  • ⚠️ Don’t overextend your lower back—engage your abs and glutes.
  • 🧍‍♂️ Lower under control and don’t lock out the elbows completely.
  • ❌ Avoid kipping or using momentum—this is a strength movement, not a swing.

💪 The band assisted chin up is your first step toward mastering your bodyweight. Train with intention, and soon you’ll be dominating the bar unassisted! 🚀
